On Sunday, June 14, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department found 21-year-old Albert Smith suffering multiple gunshot wounds before he was rushed to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The Tennessee native was an up-and-coming rapper in the South who traveled to DC with seven friends to meet up with friends - including those who are charged with killing him.

In July, the Department of Justice announced that Temple Hills resident Johnny Wilkins 34, Marcel Gavin, 31, Kharee Jackson, 30, Earl Robinson, 31, and Darryl Little, all of Washington, DC, were named in a 20-count indictment on multiple offenses.

Charges in the initial indictment include:

  • Conspiracy,
  • Three counts of first-degree murder while armed;
  • Premeditated first-degree murder while armed;
  • Assault with intent to kill while armed;
  • Three counts of robbery while armed;
  • Assault with significant bodily injury while armed;
  • Possession of a firearm with a prior conviction (Wilkins);
  • Nine counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Wilkins and a second suspect were arrested in March 2022.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, the Metropolitan Police Department announced that Jackson and Robinson have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder while armed.

According to federal investigators, while visiting friends - including his alleged killers - on June 13, 2020, Smith settled into his hotel, took an Uber to Congress Park and gambled tens of thousands of dollars through the night and into the following morning.

It is alleged that after their gambling was done, the suspects assaulted Smith and his friends when they split up, and Wilkins chased Smith down Congress Street while firing at them.

Smith was killed, another member of his group was also shot, and two more victims were pistol whipped and robbed by four men of approximately $20,000.
